The Gayatri Mantra, also known as the Sāvitar Mantra, is a highly revered mantra from the Rig Veda, dedicated to Savitr, the sun deity. Gayatri is the name of the Vedic meter in which the verse is composed.Its recitation is traditionally preceded by oṃ and the formula bhur bhuvaḥ svah, known as the mahavyahrti, or "great utterance". Vishvamitra is said to have created the Gayatri mantra. The Gayatri mantra is cited widely in Vedic and post-Vedic texts, such as the mantra listings of the Śrauta liturgy, and classical Hindu texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, Harivamsa, and Manusmṛti. It is also praised by the Buddha in the Pāli Canon.[6] The mantra is an important part of the upanayana ceremony for young males in Hinduism, and has long been recited by dvija men as part of their daily rituals. Modern Hindu reform movements spread the practice of the mantra to include women and all castes and its use is now very widespread.
Gayatri is the mother of all the vedas. Gayatri pervades everywhere. Gayatri consists of three deities, Gayatri, Savitri, and Saraswati. Of these, the first one is master of the sense, the second is the teacher of truth, and the third is the master of speech. Hence it is a Trinity of the senses, the mind, and speech. She is the Param Sakti, the universal mother and the power of god manifestation. She is depicted as sitting on a lotus with the five faces representing the panca pranas and the panca tatwas and the ten hands holding the various ayudas.
Gayatri Mantra is a sacred mantra comprising of praise, meditation, and prayer. First the Divine is praised, then It is meditated upon in reverence, and finally an appeal is made to the Divine to awaken and strengthen the intellect, the discriminating faculty of man.
